Deception and disguise are two key themes in Shakespeares Twelfth Night. As in most comedies, Twelfth Night celebrates different forms of disguise and deception in order to make the play more entertaining. It also develops a strong connection between the main plot (with Viola, Orsino, Olivia, and the others) and the sub-plot (involving Sir Andrew, Sir Toby, Malvolio, and Maria). Disguise and deception appear in many different ways throughout the story. One of the most overt examples of disguise is through the character of Viola. This is the origin of much of the deception in the play. Stranded in Illyria after a shipwreck, she dresses as a male in order to work as a Eunuch for the Duke Orsino. Sir Toby is disguising himself as a jolly, lively man to be friends with, when behind Sir Andrews back, he is nasty (sniggering with Fabian), ruthless (not caring about Sir Andrews life when it comes to the duel between Cesario) and selfish (only being with Sir Andrew for his money and wanting his niece Olivia to marry him). When Shakespeare put him in the play, he intended Sir Toby to be the funny, but also arrogant and nasty character who helps devise the plan. The most interesting character of â€Å"Twelfth Night† is Feste. He has such a double character that shows at different times of the play. His first ‘character’ or ‘personality’ is his wise and humorous one: ‘I am not tall enough to become the function well, nor learn enough to be thought a good student.’ Although he is meant to be the fool of the play, he is actually the wisest of them all. These are everyday facts about unemployment, one of the largest measuring sticks for an economy. Before you can answer any of these questions. We must determine what causes or influences unemployment? Government is the cause of unemployment. Government has a great deal of influence on unemployment. For instance, government increases minimum wage rates, which price out potential employees. Regulations that government issues affects unemployment. These regulations places high cost onto business that decrease their profits, which in return decrease their employees. The presence of unemployment is a remarkable one. Our economy can not hide or run from unemployment.Unemployment affects everyone within an economy. One person unemployed may not seem to harm anybody, but a large number within an economy does cause a wave of concern. However not every economy is similar or affected by unemployment in the same way. Each economy has its own problems of unemployment. These problems arise from the different types of unemployment. Some nations are severely affected by seasonal unemployment, while others are prone to structural unemployment. In addition to the two mention previously, two other category of unemployment exist and they are frictional and cyclical unemployment. The severity of unemployment that affects an economy is disguised by misrepresentation of reported unemployment rates. What is unemployment? It depends on which party you ask. The political definition states that a person who does not have a job, but are willing and looking for one. The economist explains unemployment as a person who is not working and is looking for a job, but is only willing to work at the prevailing wage for what they do. The definitions presented above seem similar, but are apples and oranges in comparison. The political definition states that any person who is looking for a job will take anything that becomes available to them. In short they will work for minimum wage in order to stay employed. This definition forgets that people have tendencies not to accept anything below what they are worth, regardless of skills or educational training that they have. While the economists definition includes that fact that people are only willing to work at the wage that is appropriate to what the are skilled for. For example, a steelworker will not work at McDonalds, because he is worth more than minimum wage, and will not work for anything otherwise. While our steelworker is unemployed because he does not desire to work at McDonalds he contributes to fri ctional unemployment. Frictional unemployment is the wasted time and resources that people spend looking for jobs. There are jobs available but people have to search for the right jobs. Other factors that contribute to frictional unemployment are the economical composition of the economy, and cultural values. The economical composition contributes to frictional unemployment greatly in part, because a small economy that is composed of several large firms would in theory reduce frictional unemployment. Where as the same economy has 100 small firms the friction it causes by searching for the right jobs would increase. I quit is a popular statement. It is rather rash, but very direct. The statement often leads to an increase in frictional unemployment, because people leave their jobs without attaining a replacement while in transition.It is a lack of worker etiquette. Etiquette stems from cultural values that have been instilled into a person from family, friends, and any other social n etwork of people. For instance, inner city kids often leave their minimum wage jobs because more money can be made from hustling. The problem is that these kids do not know right from wrong or have the sense of an honest living. In addition they are working at the prevailing wage of being a hustler. They do not realize the impact that they cause by leaving jobs and becoming unemployed. Another form of unemployment that causes problems for most economies is seasonal unemployment. These economies are structured around business that are functional for only a very short period then shut down until the next season. Businesses that are commonly found within these economies are tourism, hotel and catering, agricultural goods, and specialty shops. These types of bus iness bring in demand for employment only for a short time frame of months. The problem arises when the busy season comes to an end and all the workers are idle again for another year. Cyclical unemployment affects all economies just at different periods. Cyclical unemployment mimics the business cycle. When the economy is good there will be enough work to employ everybody, but when recession hits people will be laid off because demand for workers are much less. Our economy went through a terrible period of cyclical unemployment during The Great Depression. The economy was in very bad shape and people simply could not find work. After the depression passed and war happened the demand for work increased dramatically. As we are taken through the story of a period of his live, we come to understand what Smith really stands for. He is a diehard rebel that is destined to always stick to his beliefs, and is willing to sacrifice all in a battle against his greatest enemy and opressor, society. Throughout the book Smith gives us a chance to get to know him. He willingly shares his thoughts with the reader, and often times his thoughts develop as he is telling his story giving us an up-close look at the inner workings of Smiths mind and personality. Smith belongs to a group of people he calls the Out-Laws. It is the underprivileged lower class poor street criminals. Crime runs in Smiths family, and being born into poverty he nether sees, nor is even willing to contemplate a life without crime. At a point he hints on having some communist views, and perhaps suggests that his father had communist friends, if he wasnt one himself. Fatally inflicted by cancer, Smiths father died a painful death. We later find out that it was Smith who found his father breathless in a pool of his own blood, and to this day has a great deal of respect for him. The first time Smiths family gets a taste of a financially comfortable life is when the factory his father worked in gave them a lump of ca sh upon his fathers death. a wad of crisp blue-back fivers aint a sight of good (Sillitoe, 20) says Smith as the one break his family got was only due to his fathers death. He puts himself and his fellow Out-laws in direct opposition of the rest; for him its us versus them. He has no regrets about doing what he did in the bakery shop, and has a big enough heart to be happy for his accomplice, Mike for getting off. I was glad though that Mike got away with it, and I only hope he always will ( Sillitoe, 23). He is without a doubt a good man. He considers himself so but by his own standards.I am honest, that Ive never been anything else but honest, (Sillitoe, 15). He is honest to himself and is true to who he is and always be. He knows that the two worlds, the In-laws and the Out-laws, will never see eye to eye, and that is why is willing to rebel the best he can. No one person or sex was worse off than the other. Slavery was a horrible monstrosity for mankind. What I am about to tell you was found in the personal narrative of Frederick Douglass. Douglass has first hand knowledge of these unethical crimes against the black race since he himself was a slave owned by many different masters. Douglass is a very credible foundation for knowledge when it comes to slavery and the mistreating of slaves. In his autobiography, The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American slave, Douglass shows that a strict and unfair set of rules was used to enslave black men and women and their families in the 19th Century. Douglass explains that most slave owners didnt take pity on any preferred sex. Women didnt get any pardons when it came to getting whipped for not doing day to day duties, and sometimes just talking, or looking out of place. He also stated that there was one master in particular that he remembered very vividly. A Mr. Plummer, who Frederick claimed to be a miserable drunkard, would always be armed with a cowskin and a heavy cudgel and took delight in whipping men and women until they screamed, and then was invigorated by the screams and kept going until he, himself, grew tired from the beating. So neither men nor women were safe from violent whippings. Families werent safe from these regulations either. As Frederick also pointed out, it was a common custom, to part children from their mothers at a very early age. Frequently, before the child has reached its twelfth month. Commercial Limestone and Marble Explained We all encounter limestone buildings and marble statues during our lives. But the scientific and commercial definitions of these two rocks dont match. When geologists enter the stone dealers showroom, and when lay people go out in the field, each has to learn a new set of concepts for these two different names. Limerock Basics Limestone and marble are both limerocks, an old-fashioned industrial term for stone that is roasted to produce lime, or calcium oxide. Lime is a basic ingredient in cement and much else. (For more about lime, see About Cement and Concrete.) Cement makers look at limerock as chemical feedstock of greater or lesser purity and expense. Beyond that, they are indifferent to what geologists or stone dealers call it. The key mineral in limerock is calcite, or calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Any other mineral is undesirable, but a particularly bad one is dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2), which interferes with lime manufacture. In the past, quarriers, builders, craftsmen and manufacturers called limerock used for industrial purposes limestone. Thats how limestone got its name in the first place. Limerock suitable for structural and decorative purposes, like buildings and statuary, was called marble. The word comes from ancient Greek with the root meaning of strong stone. Those historic categories are relevant to todays commercial categories. Commercial Limestone and Marble Dealers in stone use limestone and marble to denote a category of stone that is softer than commercial granite (or basalt or sandstone) but does not split like slate. Commercial marble is more compact than commercial limestone, and it takes a good polish. In commercial use, these definitions arent limited to rocks made of calcite; dolomite rock is just as good. In fact, serpentinite too has minerals softer than granite and is considered a commercial marble under the names serpentine marble, green marble or verd antique.
